Senior Claims Executive – Piraeus office

The Swedish Club is a leading marine mutual insurer, headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, and with offices in Hong Kong, London, Oslo, Piraeus, and Tokyo. Senior Claims Executive – Piraeus office

We are looking for a person with a strong nautical background who is interested to work in the field of marine claims and insurance.

Our operation is divided into four teams, located in Gothenburg, Piraeus, Hong Kong and Oslo. Each team is responsible for members within a certain geographical area and has all necessary resources to deliver high quality services in relation to all classes of insurance offered by the Club. As a P&I Senior Claims Executive, you will belong to the team in Piraeus, providing support to our membership in Greece, Italy and the Middle East.

Work description
Independently handle claims and nautical matters in relation to P&I insurance, including risk assessment. Main duties:

  • Claims handling (primarily of P&I claims, including collision, cargo, pollution, etc.)
  • Nautical advice to our members in connection with insurance-related matters
  • Review of survey reports and legal advice
  • Technical rating of vessels
  • Risk assessment of prospective members and vessels
  • Ship surveys
  • Monitor and follow up technical standard and safety management aspects of vessels
  • Loss Prevention work

You may also be required to provide assistance to our Hull & Machinery department. Such duties might involve:

  • Yard selection, location of spare parts, repair specifications, negotiations and evaluation of repair costs
  • Consideration of technical advice and surveys, etc.
  • Advice on liability and cover.

The job includes travelling and interaction with shipowners, ship managers, lawyers, Club correspondents, surveyors, ship yards, classification societies, maritime authorities and other insurance companies.

Place of work

The place of work is our office in Piraeus.

Qualifications
A nautical background is considered essential. You should have significant seagoing experience. You may also have a background as a Superintendent, or other relevant work within the maritime industry. Experience of dealing with insurance claims is a strong advantage. Some knowledge of marine law is desirable.

You must be fluent in English, both written and spoken. Greek language skills would be an advantage, but this is not essential.

You need to have the ability to understand technical and legal documents and explain complicated matters both verbally and in writing. A sense of good order and structure is important, as is a consistent approach.

The job also requires a positive, committed and ‘can do’ approach. Much of the job is carried out on a team basis, and you need good social and cultural skills.

You will be expected to provide support and assistance to all members of the Piraeus team, where necessary. You will work under the Head of Claims for the Piraeus office.
