SailTech – Industrial Ph.D. student & Design Specialist

Wallenius Marine is a shipping company that provides Ship Management, Ship Design and Newbuilding services. The mission is to lead the way towards truly sustainable shipping and to get there, we believe in innovation, digitalisation and partnerships.

In recent years Wallenius Marine has supported Ship Owners in realizing state of the art LNG-powered and ice-classed RoRo-vessels as well as battery hybrid vehicle carriers. Wallenius Marine has also developed the Oceanbird concept for fully wind-powered car-carriers and is now leading the design development of the first vessels based on the concept. This groundbreaking design has the potential to transform shipping forever and is now about to be realized within the next few years.

The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) is the largest technical university in Sweden with a high ambition in the field of sustainable shipping. At the KTH Centre for Naval Architecture and Maritime Robotics, KTH has about a decade of history in sail-related research, ranging from projects on autonomy, aerodynamics, route-optimization, multi-rig trimming both using numerical simulations and experimental work.

In the collaboration project, SailTech, KTH and Wallenius Marine are now looking for an Industrial Ph.D. student who will share time between doctoral studies and research within KTH and part time work as design specialist in Wallenius Marine. The project starts in the beginning of 2024.
