Marine Standards Officer

The Marine Standards Officer is responsible on a day to day basis for the implementation, co-ordination and maintenance of Company safety, quality and environmental management and operations management systems. Working closely with colleagues on shore and afloat, the Marine Standards Officer is required to drive change and enforce compliance throughout the fleet.

This position will cover the Northern Europe region which covers our operations in the Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands and Georgia, the position will be based from our Gothenburg office and from time to time as part of the role the successful candidate will also provide cover across our European operations as and when required by the organisation.

Key responsibilities

  1. Perform the duties of DPA ensuring, as a minimum, compliance with flag state requirements.
  2. To be the trusted advisor on marine safety matters, marine management and operational systems to the to the Northern Europe business as required.
  3. Develop and nurture close working relationships with the Cluster MDs and Port Management teams in Northern Europe to promote an interdependent safety culture
  4. Liaise with the Port teams and crew, attending Safety Committees and other meetings as required ensuring that new Legislation is reviewed and disseminated where necessary.
  5. Maintain and update Documentation – Safety Management, SOPEP and Security Manuals, Management Procedures & Policies and Contingency Plans. Ensure garbage plan approvals are in place for ports of operation and statutory reporting are carried out.
  6. Produce relevant monthly and other reports in relation to all activities
  7. Provide induction of employees into the Company Safety Management System and related HSE areas, including internal training on Quality and Safety related issues.
  8. Manage implementation of safety initiatives in Northern Europe as part of company safety cultural development.
  9. To support safety training as required. 
  10. Disseminate methods of best practice / improvement opportunities gained from both internal and industry-wide sources throughout Northern Europe
  11. Conduct investigations into accidents and to prepare any relevant reports 
  12. Participate in sharing best practice within the Svitzer Group wherever possible.
  13. Perform the duties of Company Security Officer and implement Security Systems within Scandinavia.
  14. Advise Cluster and Port Offices on non-marine HSE Legislation.

We are looking for


  • Graduate calibre. Degree in maritime/marine subjects preferred.
  • Min STCW II/1 OOW COC. STCW II/2 (unlimited) Master preferred.
  • Knowledge of ISM Code, Marpol, STCW 95, ISPS, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and marine legislation 
  • Lead Auditor for quality and safety systems


  • Small vessel experience as OOW ( preferably towing experience)
  • Experience of implementation of ISO and ISM systems
  • Industrial relations experience
